On Wednesday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced it accidentally found the SS City of Chester steamship, which had long been forgotten since it sank more than a century ago. The ship was found a quarter mile east of the Golden Gate Bridge. It sank with 106 people on board on the morning of Aug. 22, 1888, after a collision with the Oceanic, a steamship twice its size that was carrying Chinese immigrants. A total of 16 people died, including two children. After the incident, press coverage claimed that the Chinese crewmen stood idly by while drowning white passengers screamed for help, but it subsequently emerged that the crew showed great heroism by risking their lives to save the passengers.
