Secretary of State John Kerry said Israel could turn into an “apartheid state” if a two-state solution is not reached. Speaking at a closed-door meeting of world officials at the Trilateral Commission, Kerry said “A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens—or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state.” Senior U.S. officials rarely, if ever, compare Israel to the formerly racially segregated South African state. Obama himself said in 2008 that the term “apartheid” is “emotionally loaded, historically inaccurate, and it’s not what I believe.”
