On Sunday, a former New York City police officer was charged with committing a hate crime after he was caught on surveillance video vandalizing buildings in a largely Orthodox Jewish Brooklyn community with anti-Semitic messages. Michael Setiawan, 36, was arrested after going on a spree Saturday night, spray-painting swastikas and other anti-Semitic messages on a Jewish school, three other buildings and 15 cars in Borough Park in Brooklyn. Setiawan faces 19 counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime. Some reports indicate, though, that Setiawan may not have been mentally stable at the time.
