For each book read, inmates in the region of Calabria in southern Italy could have their jail time reduced three days. The inmates would have their work tracked by prison officers, and it would be capped at 48 days in one year, or 16 books in 12 months. The government hopes that it will increase reading as well as free up crowded prisons. Italy is the second worst in Europe as far as overcrowding, behind only Serbia. The plan was modeled after one in Brazil called "Redemption through Reading."
