The husband of 25-year-old Farzana Praveen, the Pakistani woman who was beaten to death by her father, brothers, and other family members Tuesday for marrying against their wishes, killed his own first wife four years ago. The deputy inspector general for Punjab police, Zulfiqar Hameed, said that Mohammed Iqbal, Praveen’s husband, was arrested four years ago for killing his first wife, Ayesha Bibi. Hameed could not offer details about the killing, but told the Associated Press that the case was withdrawn after a family member forgave him. In Pakistan, murder cases can be dropped if members of the deceased’s family forgive them or if they accept “blood money” offerings.
