The decision of King Juan Carlos to abdicate was meant to appease the people of Spain, but the move has inspired many Spaniards to call for an end to the monarchy altogether. Tens of thousands took to the streets of Madrid, Barcelona, and other Spanish cities, calling for a nation-wide vote to decide whether to rid the country of the royal family. While Spain has struggled with a bad economy and high rates of unemployment among the young, King Juan Carlos was caught taking an elephant-hunting vacation in Botswana at the height of the country’s financial crisis. His daughter and her husband are being investigated for various corruption charges. While Crown Prince Felipe has a cleaner record than the rest of his family, he’s going to have to pull out baby Prince George levels of charm to assuage some angry Spaniards.
