A prison screw-up in Nebraska has resulted in 873 inmates’ sentences being erroneously reduced over the course of 20 years, state officials said on Friday. The mistake will be an expensive one: It will cost the state $50 million or more to house the inmates for the 2,050 extra years added back to their collective sentences. 41 inmates were mistakenly released early and should still be in prison; 250 are free but would have completed their sentences by now so the state is not seeking them. Nebraska’s prisons are 58 percent above capacity.
