7-year-old Wo Bin, whose eyes were gouged out in a gruesome attack last year, is able to “see” again thanks to a Brainport device that translates information from a digital camera to vibrations sensed through Bin’s tongue nerves. The boy received eye transplants and, with the device, is able to sense the shapes, sizes, and locations of objects, including Chinese characters. His accuracy is not perfect yet, but his doctor says that, with time, Bin will be able to correctly recognize the images.
