A crowdfunding site created on Monday to support Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson—who shot and killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown, sparking protests and riots in the town—has raised over $225,000 so far. The campaign, on GoFundMe, has collected funds from over 5,600 people, though some of these donors included incendiary comments with their funds that were subsequently removed by GoFundMe. The page was created “to support Officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department. We stand behind Officer Darren Wilson and his family during this trying time in their lives. All proceeds will be sent directly to Darren Wilson and his family for any financial needs they may have including legal fees.” A GoFundMe page set up for the family of Michael Brown, meanwhile, has raised $160,000 over eight days.
