John Walker Jr., a former U.S. Navy warrant officer famous for masterminding a Soviet spy ring, has died at a North Carolina prison. From his position as a warrant officer and communications specialist, Walker fed secrets to Soviets for over 17 years, compromising at least a million classified messages, according to the FBI. It was a tip from his ex-wife that helped authorities catch and arrest him in May 1985, after which he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. “I think the man was pure evil,” retired FBI agent Robert Hunter said.
