24 freelance workers in Nicaragua became trapped after a gold and silver mine collapsed on Thursday in the town of Bonanza, leaving them stuck in a mine shaft. 22 of 24 have since been rescued, with crews working Saturday to free more. One of the freed miners, Marvin Urbina, 34, said an avalanche of mud and rock fell on the miners, some of whom stuck to the walls, but at least four of whom were crushed by the debris. Interior Vice Minister Carlos Najar said the rescued miners were dehydrated but in good health. “They are coming out little by little, it’s a slow process but we want to make sure they can get out safely,” Najar said on state television. More of the miners are expected to be rescued overnight.
