Apparently, Rep. Mark Sanford's fiancee was just as surprised as the rest of the nation when he announced the end of their engagement via Facebook. “I learned it from the press today,” Maria Belen Chapur said Saturday; Sanford's post claiming “Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement” was posted Friday. Chapur says Sanford consistently put off their wedding date, claiming he wouldn't wed until his son, Blake, would not be a minor and, therefore, there wouldn't be an issue over visitation rights. After a recent trip to Paris, she thought things would change. “We were like a honeymoon. I thought that he might tell me, ‘O.K., let’s put a date, end of 2015,”’ she said. “I wrote to him, ‘I had a spectacular week, you know I love you, but I don’t want to continue in the category of mistress.' ” According to Belen, Sanford told her he'd “say goodbye” if she refused to wait another 24 month. Then, he blindsided her with the very public Facebook post. “I think that I was not useful to him anymore — he made the engagement thing four months before the elections,” Chapur said. “So this is not about his son, this is about his career and his ambitions.”
