Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf Johnson fired 10 senior government officials who failed to return to the country to help with the Ebola crisis. “These government officials showed insensitivity to our national tragedy and disregard for authority,” according to a statement from the president’s office released Saturday. The 10 senior officials—six assistant ministers, two deputy ministers, and two commissioners— were instructed to return to Liberia in August. Dismissed for being “out of the country without an excuse,” their termination was effective immediately. Liberia is one of the countries that has been hit the hardest by the Ebola outbreak. The national death toll has surpassed 1,100.
