Retiring Marine Corps Gen. John Amos said he attended the Corps’ officer training school and graduated in 1972 but it turns out he graduated via a correspondence course in 1977, the Washington Times reports. Marine spokesman Maj. John Caldwell said in a statement: "The Commandant of the Marine Corps completed The Basic Officer Course via correspondence, which was common practice for pilots during the Vietnam era. Completion of professional military education requirements via correspondence is common practice today and is another method the Marine Corps uses to satisfy educational qualifications in circumstances preventing formal school attendance." Amos previously told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a signed resumé that he graduated in 1972.
