The Department of Homeland Security ordered extra security measures for nearly 10,000 federal buildings in Washington D.C. and across the country. The action was called a "precautionary step" by Secretary Jeh Johnson, who said it was in response to "continued public calls by terrorist organizations for attacks on the homeland and elsewhere." The recent shooting at a government building in Canada was also cited as reason for the beefed up security.
