The people of Catalan headed to the polls to express their desire for independence on Sunday, even though Spain already declared the vote to be unconstitutional. More than 40,000 citizens have come forward to volunteer to run the vote, despite the fact that Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy vowed the results would have no impact on a potential Catalan state. However, Catalan leader Artur Mas warned against Spanish interference in the vote. ”If they have a minimum of common sense I think any action out of the ordinary would be a direct attack on democracy and a direct attack on fundamental rights,” he said.
