FIFA may have declared that its internal investigation found no corruption, but the FBI is actually increasing the pace of its investigation into senior leaders of the soccer organization. FIFA’s ethics committee said Thursday that its investigations into alleged corruption in the 2018 and 2022 bidding process have been closed. Those bids ended up going to Russia and Qatar, respectively. The investigation by the FBI is three years old. FIFA’s own investigator criticized the organization’s decision Thursday, declaring “Today’s decision by the chairman of the adjudicatory chamber contains numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations of the facts and conclusions detailed in the investigatory chamber’s report. I intend to appeal this decision to the FIFA Appeal Committee.”
