A Massachusetts police officer struck and killed a college student with his cruiser while responding to a burglary call early Thursday, police said. St. Lawrence University student Garrett Gagne, 22, was allegedly lying in the middle of an unlit road in Chatham when an unidentified police officer accidentally hit him shortly after 4 a.m., said Chatham Police Chief Mark R. Pawlina. The officer, who the chief described as a young patrolman with a little more than two years on the force, called for assistance to help Gagne, who was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and later pronounced dead. Gagne, a college lacrosse player and state champion in ski racing, was reportedly out celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends. Gagne’s friends told police they spent the night drinking at several different locations. Police are investigating how Gagne ended up in the middle of the road and will release the name of the officer Friday.
