Since the 2010 midterm elections, there have been 231 new restrictions on abortions enacted by states across the country. A total of 335 provisions were introduced just during the 2014 state legislative session alone, and 26 were signed into law. On the flip side, a total of 95 measures that would expand abortion access were introduced over the year, though only four of them were signed into law. The restrictive laws have more than doubled the number of states considered by the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights think tank, to be hostile to abortion rights—from 13 in 2000 to 27 in 2014.
