Over the weekend more than 45 churches, bars and hotels were burned to the ground in Niger after the French satirical publication, Charlie Hebdo, published a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad weeping while holding a sign reading “I am Charlie." At least 10 people have been killed and more than 170 injured. The controversial image came days after Islamist extremist gunned down 12 people at the publication’s office in Paris, sparking international attention. Those taking part in the protests in Niger, who population is 99% Muslim, held up flags in support of Boko Haram, an Islamist group based in Nigeria.
