Ousted Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is being charged with negligence in the Supreme Court and faces possible jail time, the Attorney General's Office said on Friday. The first female prime minister was removed from office for abuse of power just before a military coup last May. The charges against her relate to her role in a scheme that paid farmers above market prices for rice, which cost Thailand billions of dollars. If Yingluck is found guilty, she could serve a maximum of 10 years. The announcement comes just before the legislature is slated to vote in an impeachment case against Yingluck for failing to exercise sufficient oversight on the same farm-related scheme. If she is found guilty in the impeachment case, Yingluck could face a five-year ban from politics.
