Greece’s left-wing Syriza party won a historic victory over the nation’s ruling conservative party in Sunday’s national elections. With almost all votes counted, Syriza was on track to win about half the seats in the Greek parliament, The Wall Street Journal reports. Early Monday morning, Syriza clinched a coalition deal with a small right-wing party that also rails against Europe’s economic policy to claim a majority. “Today the Greek people have written history,” said Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Syriza party. “The Greek people have given a clear, indisputable mandate for Greece to leave behind austerity.” Tsipras vowed to end Greece’s austerity policies and the “five years of humiliation and pain” since an international bailout saved the country from the brink of bankruptcy in 2010.
