Just a day after an unarmed female protester was killed, at least 18 more people have been killed in protests marking the fourth anniversary of Hosni Mubarak's ouster in Egypt on Sunday, officials said. One police officer was killed during protests in Cairo while dozens were injured in both Cairo and Alexandria, according to the Interior Ministry. Two militants were also killed while allegedly trying to plant an explosive device in the Nile Delta, police said.
On Saturday police shot and killed Shaimaa al-Sabbagh at close range with shotgun pellets. She had gathered with other socialist activists on a march to Tahrir Square on the anniversary of the ousting of Hosni Mubarak. In photographs and video recorded by other protesters, Sabbagh can be seen standing peacefully outside the Air France-KLM office in Talaat Harb Square, which is near Tahrir Square. Police forces in Egypt have flooded its cities in anticipation of protests. On Sunday, a protester in Alexandria died from birdshot wounds due to police, however the Interior Ministry says the man was 52 years old and armed. A second was killed by birdshot in a Cairo suburb. Meanwhile, two police officers were wounded during a bomb explosion outside a Cairo sports club. Strategic roads, including those leading to Tahrir Square, have been blocked off by armored vehicles.
