The UN’s International Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that Serbia did not commit genocide in Croatia during the bloody battles of the early 1990s that led to the former Yugoslavia being broken up. The UN’s top court did say that while Serbia’s acts did not qualify as genocide, they were mass war crimes. Croatia first brought the genocide claim to the UN in 1999 in hopes that the court would force Belgrade to pay compensation for the death and destruction. The court is set to rule later on Serbia’s counterclaim that Croatia committed genocide against its people.
