An 1822 Gilbert Stuart painting of the first American president has been purchased for an undisclosed sum by the Louvre museum. The oil rendering, which depicts George Washington at a desk with a document and a sword, will go on display at the French institution’s soon-to-be outpost in Abu Dhabi. Stuart, who hailed from Rhode Island, painted over 100 portraits of Washington, primarily displayed in American museums. The portrait will go on display next to Jacques-Louis David’s iconic “Napoleon Crossing the Alps.”
