The United States urged China on Thursday to immediately release five women’s rights activists who were detained last week for planning demonstrations against sexual harassment on public transit. “In China speaking out against sexual harassment is ‘creating a disturbance.’ Disturbance is restricting NGOs fighting for universal rights,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power tweeted. The five women were detained ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, along with other activists who were later released after being questioned.
