After a public outcry over newly revealed cameras in its rental cars, Hertz is trying to quash fears of remote spying by promising that these features might never even end up being used—or at least not until the company installs an update allowing for their activation. Hertz communications head Rich Broome told Fusion that the devices have safety features built in that prevent the camera from activating without a driver’s knowledge, and that, if activated, their primary purpose will be to enable customers to chat face-to-face with customer-service agents.
