The U.S. Army Under Secretary Brad R. Carson apologized to Iraq veterans who were injured by chemical weapons on Wednesday and vowed more medical screening and support for those affected by exposure. Carson admitted the military failed to follow its own policies of treating soldiers who came in contact with old chemical munitions that had been left behind in Iraq. The under secretary also said the Army had reversed a decision to award a Purple Heart to a soldier burned by a sulfur mustard agent, adding that more soldiers exposed to chemical weapons were likely to receive medals.
