Days before a critical deadline to reach a nuclear deal with Iran, officials tell the Associated Press that one condition under discussion by the U.S. would allow Iran to run hundreds of centrifuges at the once-secret Fordo facility, in exchange for scaling down work elsewhere and agreeing to other restrictions. The centrifuges at Fordo—an underground, fortified bunker—would not be used to enrich uranium, instead focusing on zinc, xenon, or germanium for peaceful purposes. The site would also be open to inspections.
