The Justice Department is suing Southeastern Oklahoma State University for discrimination after the school fired a transgender professor in 2011. The lawsuit says that Rachel Tudor was hired as a tenure-track assistant English professor in 2004; later she announced she would begin transitioning to become a woman. She claims she was denied tenure and then fired from her job, despite receiving the Faculty Senate Recognition Award for Excellence in Scholarship that school year. “By standing beside Dr. Tudor, the Department of Justice sends a clear message that we are committed to eliminating discrimination on the basis of sex and gender identity,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.
