The men behind a viral 26-hour 28-minute drive from Los Angeles to New York has admitted that it really was just an elaborate April Fools’ stunt. Alex Roy—the proud owner of a previous, legitimate driving record of 31 hours—admitted the lie Thursday, in a blog post lamenting “the decline of journalism.” Roy said Wednesday that he broke the record with a souped-up car that had a second driver’s wheel and pedals (to let the passenger takeover seamlessly) and an underground network of off-duty cops helping the drivers zoom across the country without getting pulled over.
