A defamation lawsuit brought against HBO is claiming that the Time Warner subsidiary “staged” scenes and “doctored” interviews for a child labor report from 2008 that appeared on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. Mitre Sports International, who manufactures and sells sports equipment, claims HBO’s depiction of children hand-stitching their soccer balls in India for pennies were paid to act like child laborers. HBO holds that the claims have no merit, but a judge ruled there was enough evidence to go to trial. A court date is set for the coming weeks.
