A California bill that would mandate schoolchildren to be vaccinated cleared the state’s senate health committee on Wednesday, following a measles outbreak in December that began in Disneyland and affected more than 100 people across the country and in Mexico. The measure aims to prevent parents from sending unvaccinated children to school and would no longer allow exemptions based on religious or personal beliefs. Recent proposals were rejected in Oregon and Washington state and opponents of the measure argue vaccines can be dangerous. Under the proposal, exemptions would only be available to children with health issues.
