A transgender teenager in South Carolina was ordered to remove her makeup for a Department of Motor Vehicles photo—and the agency only relented after a lawsuit by her family. Chase Culpepper, 17, alleged that the DMV violated her rights and wanted her to appear not as she usually does. She won, and the department will change its policies for dealing with trans and gender non-conforming individuals. “My clothing and makeup reflect who I am," Culpepper said. "From Day 1, all I wanted was to get a driver’s license that looks like me. Now I will be able to do that. It was hurtful to be singled out for being transgender and made to feel that somehow I wasn’t good enough.”
