An American citizen working as the deputy leader of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent was one of the casualties of a January strike on a compound in Pakistan in January. Ahmed Farouq was not the direct target of strikes, administration officials said, adding that they did not know which senior officials would be entering and leaving the compound. An American and an Italian hostage were believed to have been killed in the same strike. U.S. officials did not give the date of the strike, but a eulogy released by Al Qaeda earlier this month states that the drone strike took place Jan. 15.
