The Republic of Ireland became the first country to amend its constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry on Saturday. More than 60 percent of the 3.2 million Irish people eligible turned out to vote on the historic referendum, with led by two-to-one with 34 of the 43 voting areas counted. Prominent anti-gay marriage campaigners have already conceded defeat. An official announcement is expected later on Saturday.
