Statues of three Confederate icons on the main campus of University of Texas were tagged overnight with the “Black Lives Matter” slogan. The statues depict Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Albert Sidney Johnston. The incident occurred just days after student leaders in Austin met with university president Gregory Fenves to discuss removing the Davis statue from campus. “[Our] efforts gained momentum after the Charleston shooting sparked a national debate about the role of Confederate iconography in society,” said student government president Xavier Rotnofsky. “This in turn sparked a response from students and alumni who feel that UT needs to address the confederate iconography on campus.”
