Charleston’s city council voted for a temporary ordinance Tuesday that prohibits protests or picketing at funerals ahead of services scheduled this week for the nine victims shot and killed at a historic black church. According to the ordinance, no one may protest or picket within 300 feet of a church or other building where a funeral, memorial, or burial is taking place, for one hour before and one hour after the service. Police Chief Gregory Mullen declined to identify a group or groups that may want to protest, but added the information police received about a potential demonstration was not related to the Confederate flag debate.
