A 29-year-old man has been arrested in China for allegedly spreading rumors about people in Beijing jumping off buildings in the aftermath of the stock market crash. The man is accused of writing on social media on July 3 that "there are people, because of the stock market crash, who have jumped off buildings in Beijing's Financial Street.” Over the past three weeks, China’s Shanghai Composite Index has lost roughly 30 percent of its value.New laws were issued in 2013 targeting what the government called irresponsible rumors. They carried the possibility of three years in jail if the social media post deemed a rumor is reposted 500 times or viewed 5,000 times.
