In a long statement released late Tuesday, presidential contender Hillary Clinton clarified her support for the historic nuclear deal with Iran, praising the agreement but also maintaining a hawkish stance by calling for a “clear-eyed” assessment of the Islamic Republic’s potential threat to the U.S. “We can never permit Iran to evade its obligations or to place any suspicious site off-limits to inspectors,” the statement said. “And the response to any cheating must be immediate and decisive—starting with the return of sanctions but taking no options off the table, including, if necessary, our military options.” The statement comes after Clinton spent the day in closed-door meetings with Democratic lawmakers in Congress. Clinton reportedly told House Democrats she supported the deal, but did not explicitly tell them to back it.
