Under a new state law signed by California Gov. Jerry Brown Wednesday, professional cheerleaders are guaranteed at least minimum wage, workers’ compensation and other labor protections. The measure designates the athletes as "employees" under state law and was spurred by lawsuits from cheerleaders accusing their employers (including teams like the Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills) of withholding pay, refusing to reimburse mandatory expenses, and other labor violations. The law will take effect Jan. 1 next year.
