Several of the veterans listed as part of the “Veterans for Trump coalition” say they never endorsed Trump and deny being part of the group. The New Hampshire-based group was formed after Trump ignited controversy by calling John McCain, a Vietnam war veteran who was captured and held for five years in a North Vietnamese jail, “not a war hero.” The Guardian contacted several of the veterans listed as members of the group. One veteran named Ernie Fusi, who fought in World War II, said, “I don’t know anything about it.” “I don’t like it,” Fusi said. “’Cause I haven’t given anyone permission to send my name around.” Another veteran also denied being part of Trump’s campaign. “I have no connection any more than anybody else does to him,” said Donald Richards, a veteran in New Hampshire.
