While answering a question about Planned Parenthood during an an interview with a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said he is “not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues.” Bush, who has said the federal government should defund Planned Parenthood, was answering a question about what could be done with those $500 million instead. “You could take dollar for dollar—although I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues,” he said, “but if you took, dollar for dollar, there are many extraordinary fine organizations, community health organizations, that exist, federally sponsored organizations, to provide quality care for women on a variety of health issues.” Bush’s campaign later said in a statement that the candidate “misspoke.”
