U.S. secretary of state John Kerry called for a “genuine democracy” in an address aired on Cuban state television during the raising of the U.S. flag at the American embassy in Havana. The ceremony marked the first time in 54 years that the American flag flew in Havana. In his remarks, Kerry called for Cuba to let its people choose their own leaders and said “the road of mutual isolation and estrangement that the United States and Cuba have been traveling is not the right one.”
