Pope Francis on Tuesday announced reforms that will make marriage annulments easier to obtain, adding that the point of these changes “is the salvation of souls.” While Francis insisted that marriage is indissoluble, annulments allow Catholics to remarry when the marriage is invalidated by a “fundamental flaw.” Annulments will now be free, will no longer be automatically appealed, and will be fast-tracked if neither party opposes it. To help in parts of the world with low church manpower, the process will also no longer require a three-judge tribunal.
