Japan has passed legislation that will allow troops to fight on foreign soil for the first time since the end of World War II. For days, massive crowds have gathered outside of Japan’s parliament in protest. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has faced harsh criticism by citizens and fellow parliament members for how he has outlined the laws and pushed them through even though poll numbers suggest a large portion of the population disapprove of the change. Many believe the change could fundamentally alter Japan’s global role. China and South Korea have also voiced concern at the expansion in military power.
