Alexis Tspiras will remain as Greece’s prime minister after his radical left-wing Syriza party won the embattled country’s fifth election in six years on Sunday. With 99.5 percent of the votes counted, Syriza had 35.5 percent of the vote, compared with 28.1 percent for the center-right New Democracy party. Syriza plans to retain a coalition partnership with the Independent Greeks. The snap election was called after Syriza lost its majority in August in the wake of an unpopular financial-bailout deal with international creditors. Around 55 percent turned out for the election, which is a marked drop from the 63 percent who voted in January’s poll. “We have difficulties ahead, but we are also on firm ground,” Tspiras told a crowd of supporters in Athens. “We won’t recover from the struggle by magic, but it can happen with hard work.”
