More than 130 police officials will announce Wednesday the formation of a new group aimed at tackling the nation’s mass-incarceration problem. Police chiefs, prosecutors, and sheriffs from across the country have formed Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration, a group that will push for alternatives to arrests, reducing the number of criminal laws, and ending mandatory-minimum prison sentences. Members of the organization—including NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton, Chicago’s Garry McCarthy, and Los Angeles’s Charlie Beck—are schedule to meet with President Obama on Thursday. The group also plans to release a report Wednesday to coincide with the announcement.
