A British woman who posed as a man to deceive her friend into having sex with her has been sentenced to eight years in prison on three counts of sexual assault.

Gayle Newland, 25, posed as a half-Filipino man named Kye Fortune, disguising her appearance and voice over the course of her two-year relationship with the victim, also a 25-year-old woman who cannot be named for legal reasons. The victim had agreed to wear a blindfold during roughly a dozen sexual encounters with “Kye,” who said he was ashamed of his looks after undergoing brain surgery.

The victim told the court that “something just didn’t feel right” during their final encounter, so she pulled her blindfold off and saw Newland wearing a prosthetic penis. “I just couldn’t believe it,” she said during a hearing in September, when Newland was convicted on sexual-assault charges.

Newland has claimed the victim knew she was a woman all along, and that the two were engaging in “role play and fantasy” as they both wrestled with their sexuality.

Newland first struck up a friendship with the victim on Facebook in 2011, having created “Kye Fortune” when she was 13 because she said she felt socially inept when speaking to other girls in person. Newland met the victim in person for the first time in 2013. The victim said she had received a promise ring from “Kye” two months earlier, and believed she was engaged to the handsome half-Filipino man she’d seen on Facebook.

In sentencing Newland, Judge Roger Dutton said she had “played with [the victim’s] affections, acting entirely for your own sexual satisfaction and choosing to ignore the devastating impact that the eventual truth would have on her.”
