Five lower-level Yemeni detainees who have been held at Guantanamo Bay were transferred to the United Arab Emirates, the Department of Defense announced Sunday. The detainees had been held as wartime prisoners for nearly 14 years each and none had been charged with a crime. The resettlement of the Yemeni detainees means there are now 107 prisoners remaining at Guantanamo Bay, with as many as 17 other proposed transfers in the process of review, the New York Times reports, citing an official familiar with internal deliberations. UAE has previously only accepted one former Guantanamo detainee, its own citizen, in 2008.
